Karate Classes for Adults

Our adult karate classes are open to students aged 17 and up and are focused on building martial techniques and athletic ability in people of all skill levels. Our students gain confidence in their ability to defend themselves and those they love, while working to their own level in a community of welcoming athletes.

Our Adult Karate Classes Focus On:

  1. Technique: Basic to advanced martial arts techniques focused on practicality and application.

  2. Strength, conditioning and cardio: High intensity interval training is our bread and butter. We combine this with weight training, partner drills and body-conditioning principals to elevate our students to competition level standards of performance.

  3. Kata (forms) and Kobudo (weapons): Kata and kobudo are the performance of a series of techniques in a specific pattern that cement the fundamentals of martial arts movements in a student. We use these traditional practices to help make these patterns second-nature and build our student’s mental toughness.

  4. Sparring: Foundational to practical and functional karate is the ability to spar. We teach Seienjuku style continuous sparring under the full-contact (commonly known as Kyokushin) rules that are used in competition across Japan today.

Despite the term “full-contact”, our students and instructors work collaboratively and carefully to avoid injuries while still enjoying the more intense nature of this form of fighting.

Advancement:

Our belt progression system for adults is simpler and more traditional than that used for children. We have only 6 belt ranks for adult students: White, green, green-stripe, brown, brown-stripe and black. Expect each belt to take at least 6 months of consistent training, with higher ranks taking longer.

To reach first-degree black belt takes an average of 5 years of training and is punctuated by the 10-man kumite, in which the participant is challenged to perform ten, 2-minute full-contact matches with no rest against different opponents each round.
